How do you take care of your Social Battery?
“Social battery” is a term used to describe a person's tolerance for being around others.
There are so many factors that can affect our energy for socialization. Here are A few ways I take care of my social battery:
Figure out whether I want to be social or not. I can tell my social battery is low when I'm feeling irritable.
If I'm not up for socializing, I'll take a break.
If I'm not feeling like being social, I ask myself what I have the capacity for. That means I may go to an event just to be in the company of others, but not network or make small talk. Sometimes I'll give myself a time limit to prevent myself from burning out. For example: I'll go to the party, make sure to wish the birthday person well, then leave after about 2 hours.
This week I'm taking off for a few days to recharge my social battery and get some much needed time to myself. Right on time!
It's alright if you need to take some time for yourself. You can get back to mingling with others when you're ready. If finding a balance between interaction and isolation is difficult, consider talking with a friend, therapist or other supportive person.
